Our Heart for Worship

When we worship, it comes out of a place of love—love from God that produces love for God.

In 1 Corinthians 13:1–13, Paul reminds us that without love, even the greatest words and actions are empty. In the same way, without love, these songs are just words. We are the resounding gongs and clanging cymbals this text speaks of.

But if we’re honest, sometimes our love for God wanes. Sometimes we just don’t feel it.

When that happens, we don’t want to fake it. We shouldn’t just sing because we feel like we should. If we don’t believe the words, we shouldn’t pretend that we do.

But if we do believe them deep down, and we are simply struggling to believe them in that moment because of our feelings or circumstances, we also shouldn’t let those feelings or circumstances dictate whether or not we praise and proclaim the truth of God.

The beauty of our relationship with God is that we can ask Him to fill us anew with that love.

We can sing these songs as an act of submission to His truth and as a response to what He has done for us and what He promises to do for us.

God promises that He will meet us as we draw close to Him.

So when we gather to worship, our desire is to ask God to help us take that step of obedience—to proclaim His truth regardless of our feelings or circumstances, to soften our hearts in the process, and then to sing as an act of obedience, trusting that God will meet us there.
